Monoliths is a project that delves into how contemporary design can be informed by monolithic structures.
Initially taking inspiration from a galvanising expedition to Manhattan, The Prodigious Concrete Jungle cemented a vision of raw power and grandeur into my mind. The project then led me down a path of exploration into various themes and topics, such as Brutalist architecture, Stonehenge, ritual landscapes, curated museum spaces, works by the late Richard Serra, steel, and materiality, as well as other links. All in one quest to distil a Gesamtkunstwerk of my monolithic vision.
The final outcome is a product of considered design and manufacture. A stark, homogenous steel mass stands with poise. The ambiguous nature of the lamp is revealed when a diffused white glow emanates from within, revealing rich and varied planes of patinated steel.
