This project was my response to a design competition held by Andreu World in 2023 titled ‘Beyond the Plastic Wave’. This competition asked participants to design a piece of furniture for the circular economy.
After researching the circular economy, I developed a set of guidelines that the response should follow in order to be successful. Fundamentally, these guidelines followed a ‘High Value Approach', which means preserving materials at their highest value and using them with their greatest qualities in mind.
I developed the Champagne Stool as a celebration of designing for circularity. The seat is made from recycled cork. The main frame is created using knockdown fasteners and a tessellated triangular plywood structure. Tessellation of the legs when they are manufactured further reduces wasteful offcuts.
